Classroom Management-
When a child does not meet the classroom expectations for behavior, they will first be given a verbal warning to allow for self-correction. If the behavior is not corrected after this warning, the student will be asked to sign their name in our class agenda. They will also fill out a Gardner's Great Expectations sheet describing their behavior and this sheet will need to be signed by an adult and returned the next day. Any hands-on misbehavior, offensive language or disrespectful behavior will be an automatic signing of their agenda and possible office referral. Two Gardner Great Expectation sheets in one week will be a loss of their IF recess on Friday. Missing homework will also require a student to sign the class agenda. Three missing homework assignments throughout the quarter will be an office referral.
Dog Dollars are an incentive for children to do their best at all times. To receive Dog Dollars, homework must be complete and on time, student must be cooperative and participate in class activities and behavior is appropriate in the classroom, hallway and on the playground. This money can be used in the school store to make purchases. Students may need to pay Dog Dollars for extra bathroom usage, homework not done, talking in class, etc.
Homework-Homework is assigned to reinforce the skills that are taught in class. Students will have the opportunity for guided practice on the assignment during class time. Work that is not completed during class becomes homework. It is important for students to complete the assignments so they can master the taught skills. Parents are welcome to help explain homework brought home, but after the explanation, expect your child to continue on their own. Students who are habitually missing assignments will receive a note or phone call to their parents. And for each assignment, students must fill out a Gardner's Great Expectations Reflection sheet. In addition, this paper must be signed by a parent. After 3 missing homework assignments, students will receive a strike from the office. After 3 strikes, they will lose part of their quarterly reward.
Children will have opportunities to earn free homework passes throughout the school year.
At Gardner Elementary it is our goal to make everything we do meaningful for the students. We work to ensure that real learning is taking place in the classroom, and we want our students to feel confident that the work they do will help prepare them for future learning experiences. We feel that the homework assigned should also be meaningful to the student. Our goal is to assign homework that has purpose, is efficient, allows for student choice, and is enjoyable.
Behavior Reports-If a student signs the class agenda for any reason the student will complete a Gardner Great Expectation Reflection. Please discuss this with your child, sign it and return it to school the next day. If there is ever any confusion on the reason for the signing of the class agenda, please feel free to contact me.
Daily Agenda-Assignments will be posted on the Assignment Board daily and students are expected to record all assignments and due dates in their agenda. Students will be informed well in advance of any approaching quizzes and tests. Please check your child's agenda daily. Students are at an age where they should be responsible enough to make sure their assignments are written daily. We will take a few moments each day to go over assignments and students will be given time to fill out their agendas. It is your child's responsibility to show you their agenda.
Make-Up Work-If your child is absent, they are responsible for making up their missed work. When they miss school, you may call the office to request homework to be picked up after 3:00. Homework is located in the cabinet outside the main building doors. Your child will be given one day for each day missed to make up the missed assignment, quiz or test. There is no study hall in our schedule that allows for an explanation of material missed, so any make up work for which they need my assistance will have to take place during lunch recess or before or after school.
